For Referring Doctors

A surgical specialist your patients can trust — and a referral process that works.

Elite Oral Surgery and Dental Implants is led by Dr. Jonathan Volland, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon serving the Bonney Lake Plateau and South Sound. We accept referrals from general dentists, periodontists, prosthodontists, orthodontists, and primary care physicians. Streamlined referral workflow, prompt scheduling, and clear post-operative communication.

Our Commitment

Your patients return to your care.

We refer back, every time. Elite Oral Surgery is a focused specialty practice — we do not provide general dental care, restorative dentistry, hygiene, prosthetic restorations, or any of the work that belongs in your office. When you refer a patient to us, that patient comes back to you for everything outside our surgical scope.

We communicate. You receive a written report on every patient we see — diagnosis, treatment plan, surgical record, and post-operative instructions — typically within 48 hours of the visit. CBCT scans, intraoral photos, and supporting documentation are shared electronically with your office.

We respect your timeline. Routine consultations are typically scheduled within 1–2 weeks. Urgent cases (acute pain, infection, surgical emergencies for established patients) are accommodated same-day or next-day during business hours.

We treat the case you sent. When you refer a patient for wisdom teeth, an implant, or an extraction, that's the case we treat. We focus on completing the surgical work cleanly and returning your patient to your continuing care for everything else.

Surgical Scope

What we accept by referral.

Comprehensive oral and maxillofacial surgical scope — from routine wisdom teeth removal to complex full-arch reconstructions. Cases we do not accept are listed transparently on the right.

Cases We Accept

  • Wisdom teeth (third molar) extractions, including impacted and complex cases
  • Single and multi-tooth dental implant placement
  • Full-arch implant therapy (All-on-4, All-on-6, zygomatic protocols)
  • Surgical extractions, including roots, broken teeth, and complex cases
  • Bone grafting (socket preservation, ridge augmentation)
  • Sinus lift procedures (lateral and crestal approach)
  • Pre-prosthetic surgery and ridge alveoloplasty
  • Exposure of impacted teeth for orthodontic treatment
  • Apicoectomies and surgical endodontic procedures
  • Oral pathology (biopsy, lesion removal, evaluation)
  • TMJ evaluation and management
  • Frenectomy and other soft-tissue procedures
  • Patients requiring IV sedation or general anesthesia for routine care
  • Medically complex patients (with appropriate clearance)
For full-arch implant cases, patients can self-refer — though we always coordinate with their existing general dentist when one exists.

Cases We Do Not Accept

  • Routine restorative dentistry (fillings, crowns, bridges)
  • Routine hygiene and prophylaxis
  • Endodontic root canal therapy (non-surgical)
  • Orthodontic care
  • Periodontal scaling and root planing
  • Pediatric dental care for patients under 12 (referred to pediatric specialists)
  • Hospital-grade trauma cases requiring inpatient admission
  • Complex maxillofacial oncology requiring tumor board involvement
  • Cleft palate and craniofacial reconstruction
  • Major orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery requiring inpatient stays
For cases outside our scope, we maintain referral relationships with appropriate specialists across the Puget Sound and can recommend the right path for your patient.
Practice Defaults

How we handle the most common cases.

So you can prep your patients accurately before they arrive. These are the practice's standard approaches; specific clinical factors can warrant exceptions, and we welcome calls to discuss individual cases.

Default 01 · Wisdom Teeth

All four impacted teeth removed in a single session.

For patients with multiple impacted third molars, our default approach is single-session removal of all four under in-office IV sedation. Splitting the procedure across multiple visits doubles surgical exposure, doubles recovery, and increases overall risk without clinical benefit in most cases.

Exceptions exist: patients with isolated impactions, fully erupted well-positioned wisdom teeth that simply need extraction, or specific medical considerations that warrant a staged approach. We discuss these on consultation.

What to tell your patient: When impacted wisdom teeth are present, removal of all four in a single session is typically recommended. The procedure is performed under IV sedation in our office. You'll be asleep for the surgery and will have someone drive you home afterward.
Default 02 · IV Sedation

The standard for surgical procedures.

For wisdom teeth, surgical extractions, and most implant placements, in-office IV sedation is our standard approach. Dr. Volland holds a Washington State General Anesthesia Permit and ACLS, PALS, and ATLS certifications — IV sedation is administered by the surgeon, not by an external anesthesiologist who may or may not be present.

Patient choice is preserved when clinically appropriate — patients who prefer local anesthesia for cases that allow it (single tooth extractions, minor procedures) can request that approach. The default presentation is sedation; the choice belongs to the patient.

What to tell your patient: IV sedation is standard for the procedure. You'll be asleep for the surgery itself but breathing on your own. You'll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for several hours after.
Default 03 · Single-Doctor Continuity

The same surgeon at every visit.

Elite is a single-doctor practice. Patients you refer will see Dr. Volland at consultation, surgery, and every follow-up. There is no rotating provider model, no associate surgeon, no "we'll see who's available." This is structural, not a marketing claim — it's how the practice is built.

For your patient communication: this is the structural reason patients with prior bad experiences at multi-surgeon practices or chain implant centers consistently report a different experience here. Worth mentioning to anxious patients who've been frustrated by fragmented care elsewhere.

What to tell your patient: You'll see Dr. Volland for everything — consultation, surgery, all follow-ups. He's the only surgeon at the practice. The same doctor you meet at consultation is the doctor performing your procedure.
Default 04 · Referral & Consultation

Required for most procedures, complimentary for full-arch.

For wisdom teeth, single dental implants, surgical extractions, sedation evaluations, TMJ, and most standard OMS referrals — a referral from you is required and a paid consultation applies. This protects the referral relationship and signals appropriate clinical handoff.

For full-arch implant cases (All-on-X), patients can self-refer — and the consultation is complimentary. We coordinate with their existing general dentist whenever one exists, but full-arch patients don't need a referral to schedule. Worth knowing so you can direct full-arch-curious patients accurately.

What to tell your patient: For [wisdom teeth / implant / extraction / etc.], I'll send a referral to Elite Oral Surgery. You'll have a consultation with Dr. Volland to discuss the procedure before scheduling. The consultation is paid; insurance often covers most of it.
Default 05 · Imaging & Records

What we need in the referral packet.

For most cases: a recent panoramic X-ray (PAN) and any periapical or bitewing imaging relevant to the case. For surgical extractions and complex cases: also helpful to include the patient's medical history, medication list, and any sedation history.

For implant cases (single or full-arch): existing imaging is helpful but not required — we'll obtain 3D Cone Beam CT imaging at our practice as part of consultation. If you have CBCT imaging of acceptable recency, sharing it can streamline planning.

What to send with the referral: Recent panoramic X-ray, relevant periapicals, brief clinical note describing the case. Patient demographics and insurance info if available. We'll request anything additional needed during consultation.
Default 06 · Communication Back to You

Treatment summary after every visit.

For every patient you refer, you'll receive a treatment summary after the consultation, after the procedure, and at the conclusion of the case. The summaries include clinical findings, treatment performed, post-operative care, and any recommendations for ongoing dental care that affect your continued treatment of the patient.

For complex cases or unusual findings, we call you directly. We respect that the patient's primary dental care relationship is with you — our role is to handle the surgical specialty piece and return them to your continuing care.

What to expect: Treatment summaries delivered to your office within 48 hours of each appointment. Direct surgeon-to-dentist call for any unusual findings. Patient returned to your continuing care without ongoing surgical follow-up beyond standard post-operative monitoring.

Common questions from referring doctors.

How quickly can my patient be seen?

+

Routine consultations are typically scheduled within 1–2 weeks of referral receipt. Urgent cases (acute pain, infection, post-operative complications, or other surgical emergencies) are accommodated same-day or next-day during business hours. For after-hours emergencies, patients should be directed to the nearest emergency room or urgent care.

What information should I include with the referral?

+

At minimum: patient name, contact information, brief clinical reason for referral, and any urgency considerations. When available, please include: relevant radiographs (panoramic, CBCT, periapicals), medical history summary, current medications, and any prior surgical or dental treatment notes. The more clinical context we have, the more efficient the consultation.

Please use HIPAA-compliant channels (efax, encrypted email, secure portal) for protected health information. The online referral form should be used for initial contact only, without detailed PHI.

Will my patient be returned to my care?

+

Yes. Elite Oral Surgery is a focused specialty practice. We perform surgical care; we do not provide restorative dentistry, hygiene, prosthetic restorations, or other general dental services. Once surgical care is complete, patients return to your office for ongoing care and any prosthetic restoration phases.

Do you accept the same insurance plans I do?

+

We accept most major dental insurance carriers and verify benefits before treatment for each patient. Coverage varies significantly by procedure — wisdom teeth and surgical extractions are generally well-covered, while implant procedures often have limited insurance coverage. Our office provides written cost estimates for patients before treatment begins, including expected insurance contribution and patient responsibility.

How does Elite handle full-arch implant cases referred to your practice?

+

Full-arch implant therapy is a focus area of our practice and one of the few procedures patients can self-refer for. When you refer a full-arch patient, the surgical care is performed at Elite. The final prosthetic restoration is currently fabricated through our preferred laboratory partners; patients return to your practice for ongoing oral health needs unrelated to the implant restoration.

For general dentists who would like to perform the prosthetic phase themselves, we are open to collaborative arrangements where the surgical phase happens at Elite and the restorative phase happens at your practice. Discuss this with us at the time of referral.

What if I have a question or want to discuss a case before referring?

+

Dr. Volland welcomes case-based discussions with referring colleagues. Call our office during business hours and ask to schedule a doctor-to-doctor call. For non-urgent cases, email is also available. Treatment planning consultations are particularly welcomed for complex full-arch cases, medically compromised patients, and cases where you're considering whether referral is appropriate.
